Project Overview

Engine: Unreal 4

Development Time: 4 months

Shatter Way is a puzzle level created in Unreal 4. I was tasked on creating a level using a mechanic that changed the direction of a laser that could be connected to conduits to trigger events in a room. I was also tasked on adding my own personal mechanic to the level. My mechanic was the ability to shatter glass using boxes found within different rooms of the level.

A fun Mechanic

In addition to using the laser mechanic I was tasked in creating an additional personal mechanic. This mechanic was the destruction of glass walls using special cubes in different rooms. When a player walks into a glass wall with said cube the wall will shatter and disappear after a few moments along with the cube itself.

Unique rooms

To make this level interesting I created a 3 way level. When players enter the level they see their goal immediately behind 2 layers of glass, thus they need 2 cubes. the Level is divided into 3 rom total. The orange room, the purple room, and the center room. The purple room uses conduits trees that players can raise or lower to continue the flow of power. the orange room has floor conduits that can turn to change the flow of power. and the center room uses both conduit trees and floor conduits to open the final door and reveal the exit. the two different colored rooms have their own mechanics making them unique while the center room combines both of them, also making it unique.

Along with creating the layout and mechanic for this level, i was also tasked in creating assets for this level. These assets ranged from the layout (walls, doors), to the props inside (signs, boxes). I added several emissive affects to my assets to give a glow to the level as well.

Postmortem

What went well

What went wrong

Even Better If...

Fun mechanic - Players enjoyed shattering glass walls

Lighting - Players enjoyed the glow from the rooms coming from the assets and other lighting added to the rooms

Schedule - I was able to get most or all changes I wanted for my milestones done thanks to scheduling

Bugs -There are some bugs with the box running into the glass wall where there is a delay before the box disapears

Assets -
Some of the rooms are rather empty due to lack of props

Debug faster - I will set up more time in the future to playtest and debug features in a project

Create more props - I the future I will focus more time on creating props for my interiors so their is more variety and less empty rooms
