Project Overview

In a team of 60, I was one of the many level designers who worked on Hex rally Racers. I worked with teams on designing the environment for the Cloud Capital  race track, placing proxy models and eventually adding final assets. I also helped to develop mechanics and gameplay for the game including the first iterations of the track ramps and the flythrough cameras before each race track.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Designed and created the first iteration of the forest environment of the Cloud Capital map

  • Created the first iterations of each tracks fly through camera

Level Design

As a level designer I was given the task of researching materials for Hex Rally Racers, along with creating track, environments, mechanics, and gameplay. I Spent much of the pre-production stage of development researching games and creating examples of button layouts for our games controls on controller. I researched games such as Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for controls that would satisfy either a and based vehicle or flying based vehicle since our brooms would be floating.

Once the game controls were set we broke into teams and started designing tracks for our game. We were givn the goal of creating 6 unique tracks  with 2 maps following 1 of 3 themes, forest, flying city, and mushrooms. I was placed in a team tasked with creating a track with a flying city theme, this track would become Cloud Capital. I helped design the layout of cloud capital along with creating the forest environment within the track.

Cloud Capital

Cloud Capital Is the second track to include the flying city theme in Hex Rally Racers. The environments with the track include a Castle, a forest, and a village center, all on top of floating islands surrounded by clouds and floating rocks.  A team of 2 artists and 4 level designers  worked together to design and create cloud Capital. I helped design the layout of the track and focused on the forest environment for the majority of the tracks production.

Ramps

Outside of the environment and design of cloud capital I also Created the ramp mechanic for the game overall. The ramp gives a speed boost that can be adjusted individually. the model of the ramp can also be changed for different maps

Even Better If...

We Released! - Hex Rally Racers is now available to play on steam for free

6 Tracks - We were tasked with the goal of creating 6 unique tracks and we did

Strike Teams - Each milestone we wee placed in different groups each with a mixture of level designers, artists, and programmers for better communication with each other

Playtesting -Unfortunately we only had one set group doing playtests for our game, this limited the amount of bugs we found to that one group until the final day.

Team communication - 
Communication between certain groups was limited as sometimes work would be overwritten or disappear

 

New Playtesters -With more people playtesting the game with different styles we would have found more ways to break our game

Team coordinator - If we had someone to communicate ideas between teams less work would have been overwritten.
